（メモ）ご用命どうぞ私はat your service，名乗ってよろしく、呼ばれればさよう
好き勝手に使ってよろしい
手元の学習英作文辞典の教えによれば、かの文化圏において「よろしく」のような他人依存の表現はおよそ存在しがたい。たとえば「こんどもよろしくお願い」するかわりに「また一緒に○○できるのを心待ち」にする。
あるいは表題のAt your serviceに「あなたの下僕」的精神なぞ微塵もなく「有能なる私を頼りにできておめでとう」という自信に満ちたことばなのかもしれない。
しかし、そうむずかしく考えないことにする。
ネット上の既存の指摘
基本的なことは英語版ウィクショナリーのat your serviceに書いてあることで尽くされている。特に自己紹介の際の決まり文句らしき用法があり、これを知らないと妙な感じのすることがある。at your service - Wiktionary

問題の表現は必ずしも英語特有の表現ではなく、露語ではК вашим услугамという。例えば次に示すようにCortinaメソッド露語教本Russian in 20 Lessonsの15課にあるのは*1 （和文は拙訳）、
オリガ：＊お尋ねしたいことがあります。

この引用の場面では、およそ「お仕えする」➡「お力になります」という趣旨として文字通りに理解可能な用法である。
よろしく
当初私が奇異に感じたのはあのベリャ―エフ「難破船の島」翻訳中であって、第四部第八章、ビビアナのフローレスとの再会の場面。
— Флорес! — с изумлением воскликнула Вивиана.
＊「フローレスさん！」びっくりしてビビアナが叫んだ。
— К вашим услугам, — ответил он, пожимая руку гостям, — прошу извинения за свой вид.
＊「いかにも。よろしくお願いします」と返事をして手を差し出した。「見た目はご容赦願いたい」
Все лицо Флореса посинело, шея вспухла, а на виске виднелся большой шрам, из которого еще сочилась кровь.
＊フローレスの顔は蒼白、首は腫れ、こめかみに見える大きな傷跡からまだ血が滴っていた。
この場合初対面ではないが、「使ってよろしい」➡「よろしく（お願いされます）」というような挨拶としては理解できる。（「いかにも」の部分については後回し）
実際「よろしく」の英訳としてat your serviceが用いられる例として見つかるものとしてこんなものがある（グ・ラハ・ティア）。

さらに最近、昔のTVドラマThe Infinite Worlds of H. G. Wellsの The Truth about Pyecraft (2001)に、それらしいセリフを見つけた。
ＨＧウェルズに知人が話し掛けてＨＧの連れジェーンに自ら名乗ってあいさつする場面（誤訳はもちろん聞き違いがあったら御免）
Wells, my dear chap!＊ねえ、ウェルズ君！ This, er, this gorgeous creature must be Jane.＊このう、この麗しきお方はきっとジェーンさんに違いありますまい。 Mark Pattison, at your service.＊私めマーク・パティソン、お見知りおきを。
仰せのとおり
しかし、どうも、単純に「よろしく」ではない場合があるように見える。ホームズの「そうです」、フローレスの「＊いかにも」のように、肯定する返事らしき場合がある。あるいは英語版ウィクショナリーに掲載の（サムエル記下9：2らしき）この例にもその気配が濃厚である：

"Are you Ziba?" the king asked him. "At your service!" he answered.
実際、同箇所の他の英訳に当たると（いろいろなものがあるけれど）“Yes sir,” he replied.などとなっているものがある。
つまり 「そうです」や「＊いかにも」と矛盾しない。「そうです（よろしく）」なのか。あるいは「そうです（それでいかがしましょうか）」なのか。あるいは「仰せのとおり承る」が転じて「仰せのとおりでよいですよ」なのか。どちらにせよ先方の発言が当たっていることを伝えることばになってしまう。
こちらの和文では結局「はい、僕がヂバです」ということだ：

まとめ
字面では相手が対象を任意に利用可能である状況を示すat your service（以下a.y.s.）であるが、ここでは話者を対象にしたとき実質
- 利用を促す「どうぞ」 Ask, I am a.y.s.
- 名乗って友好姿勢を示す「よろしく」 Mark Pattison, a.y.s.
- 名を呼ばれて肯定する「そうです」 Are you Ziba? A.y.s.
と解釈できそうな三とおりの用途に注目した。いずれも硬い表現である。

キップス翻訳再点検まだまだ
これまでの「いつ終わるのかわからない作業」とは異なり、ペンギン・クラシクスの注釈とは関係のない「キップス」翻訳の再点検。
生活するmove
これは題辞の文。
Those individuals who have led secluded or isolated lives, or have hitherto moved in other spheres than those wherein well-bred people move, will gather all the information necessary from these pages to render them thoroughly conversant with the manners and amenities of society.
よく見れば手元の英語学習辞典にも載っていたが、文中のmoved inはlived inあるいはbeen socially active inと言い換えうる。この文に限っていえばmoveは「生活する」と訳しても構わないのである。以前の拙訳では「行動する」というように訳していたがよろしくないので修正する。
人付き合いのない生活、隔絶した生活を送る者、あるいはこのかた育ちの良い人たちの生活する世界とは別の世界でしか生活してこなかった者も、以下の各頁を心して読むならば、十分の情報を得て社会の作法や礼儀に精通することになろう。
華翰favour
こちらは上巻§2.1から。
But, on the other hand, if he saved words here, he wasted them there: he never acknowledged an order that was not an esteemed favour, nor sent a pattern without begging to submit it.
×しかし、一方では、そんなところでことばを節約しても、別のところでは浪費した。ご厚意にならないなら決して発注を承認しないし、懇願せねば生地を送らない。
これは相当はずれている。
古くは商業文で手紙の意味で厚意favourを用いることがあった。主人heは発注元に「この度は確かに注文書を受け取りました」という趣旨のことを書くのに注文書のことを必ずesteemed favourで表わし（acknowledge your esteemed favour）、ある品物を送るときには必ずsendをbeg to submitと書き表わしたというのであろう。英語の長さを和訳に反映するのは難しい。

受注を発注元に伝える文中にあっては必ずゴクワカンハイリャウ（御華翰拝領）、生地を送る際にも必ずカシコミゴナフニフ（畏み御納入）した。
足るcover、（他の）男だれにもall his sex
これは上巻§3.2、「私」がキップスの矜持を雄弁に語る部分から。
To approach such a being, to perform sacrifices and to perish obviously for her, seemed the limit he might aspire to, he or any man. For if his love was abasement, at any rate it had this much of manliness, that it covered all his sex. It had not yet come to Kipps to acknowledge any man as his better in his heart of hearts.
下線部を中心に意味不明だが文脈等状況から気合いで趣旨を推定するに、もしやこの文章はこう言っているのか―――
そのような人に接近（アプローチ）するには、それがキップスであれ他の男であれ、明らかにその人のために犠牲になること、命を投げ出すことが、目指しうる限界に思えた。なにしろ、たとい卑下の愛であれ、同性のだれにも劣らぬ丈の男らしさがこの愛にはあるのだ。まだキップスは心の底から他の男を自分より優れていると認めようとは思わない。
以下、正当化（こじつけ）を試みる。
下線部it covered all his sexとはどういう意味か。
まずhis sexは男性だが、男性という人間の集団を意味するものとして解釈するのが順当であろう。根拠は前後のany manからそう連想されるのと、グーグル検索でall his sexの用例を当たると（少なくとも昔のものは）「彼と同性の人間全員」もしくは「（ほかの）どの男も」と読めるものばかりが目につくからである。少し実例を挙げておく。
（例１）女性雑誌（1773）The Lady's Magazine Or Entertaining Companion For The Fair Sexの145頁、淑女のための格言・助言Maxims and Reflections recommended to the Confideration of the Ladies, By a Friend to them.の197段（CXCVII）から
It is mean, it is ungenerous in a woman to behave capriciously to a man of sense and character who makes honourable addresses to her, and whom she really prefers in her heart, to all his sex; such treatment is never forgotten by such men.
ここから適宜語句を拾ってつなげると、ほかのどの男より好きな人a man whom she prefers to all his sexが読み取れる。

は、敵？adversaryおよびその同性諸君に告げよう、というのだろう。
（例３）雑誌The Atlantic MonthlyのVolume 131（Feb 1923）、174頁(The Timid Sex By Robert M. Gay)

例１と例３とにおいて明らかにall his sexから彼he本人は除外されている。もっとも、数学教育に害されていない健常人ならば、キップスと同性の人、と聞けば、それはキップスとは別人と思うものであろう。
問題の文に戻るとall his sexは前後の文に見えるany manと似た意味と思われる。あるいは集団であるからall menというべきか。すると下線部はit covered all menで近似できよう。代名詞it は何を指すか？先行する最寄りの名詞manlinessもしくはthis much of manlinessが有力候補であろう。当然それが述部と自然に繋がって意味を成すかが問題だ。動詞coverは覆う、あるいは応じられるという感じで捉えよう。彼の地において男らしさmanlinessが魂の外装であり被せたり着込んだりするものと考えているのかどうかわからない*1。がit covered all menがおよそ、いかなる男にも十分だった（はず）it (should have) sufficed for all men、ということであろう。対象が複数なのが気になるが、何かがsuitable for all menとか言うように、あるいは日本語でも「すべての男性にご満足頂ける」などと言うように、各人向けのものに集団に対するような表現が用いられることはあるものである。
ところで、この文の二番目のコンマは（現状）ベンギン・クラシクス版にはない。

この表記の利点はｉｆ ～，～．という従属節，主節の構造が明らかなことであろう。反面、主節の構造が見えにくい恨みがある。一見、学校英語を思い出して、もしや最初のitはthat以下を指すのかしらん、とも考えうる。が、それはとらない。前の引用にあったコンマを挟んでおよそthis much of manlinessとthat節は同格appositionのように考える。つまり、どれだけの男らしさかというとどんな男性にも不足のない量の男らしさだというのである。ただし正確に同格とは言えまい。むしろ結果のthat節か。
結局のところ未だ釈然としない。
釈然とはしないが、男らしさという尺度で自分は同性にくらべ勝るとも劣らないというキップスの気持ちが察せられる。
他方もしもこの競争意識は弱めて、ぎりぎりの目標を語る前文の流れに沿って敷衍するならば、問題の文はあるいは次のようにも書き換えうるかもしれない。
＊For if his love was abasement, at any rate it ( = his love ) had as much of manliness as could possibly be expected of a man.（なにしろ、たとい卑下の愛であれ、ひとりの男に望みうる限りの男らしさがこの愛にはあるのだ）

とんで第４節。

店の前面に「合同書籍販売ユニオン」とあり、それは、四十を過ぎた者ならベルンカステラー・ドクトール（ワイン）の正規のラベルを認めるように本を買おうとする者なら認めることになる洗練された芸術的な字体で綴られ、ついで「アーサー・キップス」とあった。

×？手洗いをいとわず、アンカットの（化粧裁ちしていない）ページを器用に読める者は、毎日、在庫品の中で、ケーキを減らさず食べる（消費せずに楽しむ）こともできる。
拙訳のようにuncutは日本でもアンカットで通用し、「化粧裁ち」は「仕上げ裁ち」とも呼ばれる。ただし本についてはそうらしいが、（日本で）ページについてアンカットというかは不明。
とにかくそういうものを読めると引用文はいっている。（普通は切って読むものだが）切らずに読めるだろうか？それともこっそり切って読むことをいっているのだろうか。切りそろえてなくとも全辺閉じているわけでもなく切らなくともなんとか読めるのかもしれない。
注はページを切らずに本が販売されていた事情の指摘。
下巻第３章注５のある文（sacristan）

拙訳の「君は」はやめておこうか。「もう去らせ」、「はや去らせ」とか？

注はdigueをdyke, or ditchと言い換える。
溝、土手、堤防、どれ？
or ditchとは、あるいはditchかも知れぬというのか、要するにditchなりというのか？
地図をながめても（私には）わからない。
手元のイタリア語版（Valentina Capocci訳）はたぶん堤防（diga）。
フランス語digueでも似たようなもの。
ここはdigueというつづりを重視すべきであろう。
きっと翻訳当初もそう考えたにちがいない。
