キップスの邦訳につき、ペンギン・クラシクスの注部分をチェックする作業の続き。

夕暮れ近く、二人は教会のゲートのところで鉢合わせした。キップスは頭ではいろいろ考えていたが、そこから先へは、どうしてもおじけづいて進まない。結局、二人とも息が切れるまでコフキコガネを追いかけてから、ゲートの自分達の場所に腰掛けていた。

おばの一番上等のはさみを拝借し、自分の子供じみたブリキの貯金箱から六ペンスを抜き出し、半分にしようといろいろやってみるうちに指を刺した。
注はjejuneの言い換え。フランス語だというけれど、手持ちの仏語辞書には見あたらぬ。英語辞書によればラテン語由来でなぜかfasting（絶食）の意味。ieiunus - Wiktionary
