キップスの邦訳につき、ペンギン・クラシクスの注部分をチェックする作業の続き。

He spent five shillings on five serial numbers of a Home Educator, and bought (and even thought of reading) a Shakespeare and a Bacon's "Advancement of Learning" and the poems of Herrick from a chap who was hard up.
独習雑誌五冊に五シリングを投じ、金に困っている男からシェイクスピアとベーコンの「学問の進歩」とヘリックの詩集を購入（そして読もうとさえ）した。
注３はHome Educatorが通信教育一般を指すウェルズの用語という。拙訳の底本にも通信教育の旨の注があった。
通信講座テキストの（何号からか）連番５号を購入した感じ。
注４はFrancis BaconのThe Advancement of Learningの主張とRobert Herrickの辞書的人名説明の記述。

Moreover, he discovered one day, while taunting the junior apprentice with ignorance, that his "rivers of England" had also slipped his memory, and he laboriously restored that fabric of rote learning: "Ty Wear Tees 'Umber...."
さらに、ある日、ジュニア見習いを無知だとなじっている最中に気づいた。知っていたはずの「英国の河川」までが記憶から抜け落ちているではないか。苦労してあの暗記の芋蔓を復旧した。「タイン、ウィア、ティース、ハンバ、・・・」
注はTyne, Wear, Tees, Humberにつき、F. WattらのThe Rivers of England（1889）にあるように、英国の東へ最北に流れる川と特徴づけ。
