いつ終わるかわからない作業：訳文の再点検（４５）
「キップス」の邦訳につき、ペンギン・クラシクスの注部分をチェックする作業の続き。

中巻７章注１のある文（Don't they go it just）

×「金持ちの大物がまた一人。うまくやってるな」と言われるだろう。
形からみて下線部は感嘆文と思われる。しかし拙訳は原意とは異なるらしい。
ペンギン・クラシクスにおいて下線部のdoは（拙訳の底本とは異なり）goになっている。注によれば豪勢にもしくはどんどん金を使う、というような意味らしい（金離れが良い）。
イタリア語版（Valentina Capocci訳）もUh, come se la spassano! ——いや、注のとはやや違う意味か（やれやれ存分やっているな？）。spassarsela - Wiktionary
go it justはgo itの強調と考えられる。口語go itのindulge in wild spendingという意味（OALD第三版）を採用すれば、なるほど注の教えるような意味になるわけだ。
goをdoにしたらどうかは知らない。
（追記：否定疑問！）下線部は疑問文の構造を取る感嘆文exclamation in the form of a questionとも感嘆疑問exclamatory questionとも呼ばれるものに該当する。否定疑問の形なのが気になるが（イギリス）英語ではむしろこの形が普通である。単純な疑問の形の場合もあるが、それは特に米語で普通である。以上は手元の英語参考書*1からの受売り。
しかし下線部の場合、反語的な否定疑問と思って解釈してもよいように思われる。きっと気前よく金を使ってくれるに違いないという期待と考えてはどうか？実は、このあとタクシー運転手にあいさつされてキップスは断ることになるのである。

何よりも、店にはいってみっともないことにはなりたくなかった。店によっては、ばかにされるだけでなく、恐ろしく法外な代金を取られるところがある。
注はrookをcheatと言い換える。

第２節にはいった。
He discovered another means of London locomotion in the Underground Railway, and recovered his self-possession in that interest. "You don't mind going third?" asked Sid, and Kipps said, "Nort a bit of it."
キップスは、地下鉄道にロンドンの新たな移動手段を発見し、その興味のおかげで冷静さを取り戻した。「三等で行くが、いいかい？」とシドは尋ね、キップスは言った。「まったく構わないよ」

シドは頭をちょこっと傾けて、ちょうど車窓の外に現われたサウス・ケンジントンを示した。

"He's written a book on science already. 'Physiography,' it's called. 'Elementary Physiography'! Some day he'll write an Advanced—when he gets time."
「既に科学の本を一冊書いたんだ。『地文学』という。『初等地文学』だ。いつか高等のほうを書くって―時間のできたときに」
注はウェルズの著作Honours physiography（共著）の出版を指摘する。しかしその前書きを見ると先行するthe Elementary and the Advanced Physiographyの（２つの）著書があるといっており、ここではむしろそちらが話題になっているように思われる。

マースタマンは何もノーン・アリエーヌムとはプタッしない（無縁だとは思わない）んだ。
注は下線部はnil a me alienum putoのくずれたもの、といい引用元を特定。
