注はFoozle IleをFusel oilと正して辞書的定義を記す。フーゼル油 - Wikipedia
拙訳はIleの読み替えに失敗しての誤訳である。素朴にアイルはオイルに訛るかもしれないが、その逆の現象である。想像するに、「正しい」発音をしようとしてそうなってしまうのであろう。拙訳は下線部周辺も修正せねばならない。「ふーぜる油っていうやつが這入ってるものだからね、・・・」
（再考）問題の文は、こう読めよう：（連中はウィスキーに）フーゼル油を入れて、それが私のここに当たる。最後の「当たる」（catchのところ）は怪しい。this （hereは無視してよい）はこの会話においてフーゼル油という語が初出であることを示している。
（反省）そもそもフーゼル油というものを知っていればFoozle Ileはそれのこととわかったろう。そうでなくとも（このあたりを最初に翻訳したときに用いた辞書ではないが）手元にある古いCOD*1によってでもFoozle Ileがフーゼル油のことであることに気づきうる。まず見出し語にfoozleがあり、その語源欄にfuselの項を参照している（cf. FUSEL）。そしてfusel項にはほぼfusel oilのことしか書いてなく、その定義に４行も割いているのだ。ペンギン・クラシクスの注よりも断然詳しく、（今は否定されているらしいが）酒を有害もしくは毒にする、とまで書いてある。
（発音メモ）foozleとfuselとの発音の差はooとu（ウーとユー）の違いにある。カナ書きすればフーズルとフューズルの違い*2。
中巻４章注２のある文（after Morland）
You cannot lead a conversation straight from the gastric consequences of Foozle Ile to Love, and so Kipps, after a friendly inspection of a rare old engraving after Morland (perfect except for a hole kicked through the centre) that his Uncle had recently purchased by private haggle, came to the topic of the old people's removal.

注はCherubimの辞書的定義。 通常、羽根の生えた子供として描かれると書いてくれているので、bright-eyedの意味を特定するのに役立つかもしれない。似た語にstarry-eyedというのがあり、少女漫画に描かれる目を連想したりするものだが、辞書を引くと非現実的、夢想的みたいな意味があることがわかる。おそらくbright-eyedは子供の形容に多用されるのだろう。目の輝きにしろ動きにしろ、目をきらきらさせる感じであろう。意欲的という意味があって、目を輝かせて、のような日本語に通じる。
（追記）Kippsにbright-eyedは３か所ほど出てくる。それ以外に目eyesをbrightと形容する箇所もいくつかある。従来拙訳ではこれらbrightを一貫して「明るい」で通していた。

炉棚に載っているのは、黒い巨大な古典様式の置時計が一台、バーズレム製のエトルリア様式の花瓶、点火時に使う木の棒か紙片やようじを受ける刳りぬいた岩の大きな入れ物、大きな溶岩の灰皿、それに非常に大きいマッチ箱が一つ。
