Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soulから、主に会話部分のちょっと読み難いつづりを少し列挙して記録する。

「deuced」と読む。引用では下線部が「a damn sight better」と同様の意味になる。

Coote, in the subsequent conversation, had protested quietly, "You're going on all right, you know," to which Kipps had answered he didn't care a "Eng" about that,

Foozle Ile

They put this here Foozle Ile in it, my boy, and it ketches me jest 'ere." He indicated his centre of figure.

「Foozle Isle」もしくは「Fusel Isle」か？？foozleならばスラングで、しくじりか？Fuselならドイツ語で低品質のアルコール飲料。

「いや、大丈夫だ。構わない男で、話し好きだ。だれとでも話すだろう」と、シドはそう言って請け合い、わかりにくいロンドン風味のラテン語をちょっとつけ加える。「マースタマンは何もノーン・アリエーヌムとはプタッしない（無縁だとは思わない）んだ。わかるだろ？」

ラテン語はまだあまりわからないが、下線部はロンドン訛りを除くと三人称単数現在の「putat」を意図したのだろうと推定する。

There sat beside him a young servant who was sucking peppermint and a little boy with a sniff, whose flitting eyes showed him curious to know why ever and again Kipps laughed, and beside the driver were two young men in gaiters talking about "tegs."

キップスの横の席には若い女中がいて、ハッカドロップをなめており、それと鼻をすする小さい男の子がいて、その目があっちこっちに走ってキップスが時おり笑うのはなぜかを知りたがっていることを示し、御者の横にはゲートルを履いた二人の若者がいて、くつひもの「てんし」（端子）について話していた。

そのまま「tegs」と読む手もあるが（tegは二年目の羊などを意味するという）あまりに唐突なので、ある人は「tags」と読んでみる。ゲートルの若者のことばであるから、tagはくつひもの先の金具のことと解釈可能であろう。翻訳では「端具」（タグ）という造語を使う誘惑は退けたが、駄洒落風味の処理に堕っした。

なお、参考のイタリア語訳（カポッチら）、ロシア語訳（オブロンスカヤ）では、それぞれ「若い羊」、「スポーツ」のように訳している。「スポーツ」とする理由は読んだときに自然に感じさせること以外、考えつかない。

"Ter-dash it, Yes, Ann!" swore Kipps, exploding in a shout. "Ain't I tellin' you?"

現在、一般には「ter」は、なまった「to」を表記するのに使われる。一方、「ter」そのままで三回を意味する副詞（特に音楽）。もしも、このいずれかであれば、後者であろう。つまり「thrice dash」というのかと。

toce

Then we'll 'ave a bit of tea, with tea cake—all buttery, see? Toce it ourselves, p'raps. Eh?"

そしたら、僕らはちょっとお茶を飲もう。ティーケーキ（一種のパン）にバターをつけてさ。ね。僕ら自分たちで炙れば良いだろう。どう？」

「Toast」しか思いつかない。

Well, my boy, If y' don't 'ussel a bit y'll never write London orders, that's pretty plain. 

「hustle」と読む。

"System!" he would say, "system. Come! 'ussel!" and issue sharp, confusing, contradictory orders very quickly.

「Hustle!」と読む。実は、以前YouTubeにある朗読を聞いたとき、mustle（かmussel）と読んでいるように聞こえたのだが、今思うと単に前のcomeの末尾の子音を借りているだけ（連音）なのかもしれない。
