ファリングドン・ストリートとの交差点でためらい、ぶらり先に進みセント・ポールズまで来ると、主に破格特価品のショウウィンドウの店ばかりの、教会の庭のところを回ってチープサイドの通りに行った。
古い英語辞書を見ると「To get (or to have) a dead bargain 」として「冗談のような価格で入手する」（um einen Spottpreis bekommen）などと、記載がある。あるいは古いフランス語学習書に「I bought these books a dead bargain= J'ai acheté ces livres à très bon marché (or presque pour rien)」などとある。これらを参考にする。いつも参考にしているイタリア語訳も似た感じだ（ottimi affari）。
「dead bargains」ということばが、教会の庭とチープサイドに挟まれていかにも何か意味ありげだが、正直、深いことはわからない。参考にしているロシア語訳では花輪や棺桶のことなのだといっているようだ（「миновал магазины, где выставлены были все больше венки да гробы」）。そうなのかもしれない。
