キップスの邦訳につき、ペンギン・クラシクスの注部分をチェックする作業の続き。

上巻２章注11のある文（'cost' mark）

But he was not, of course, taught the "cost" mark of the goods he sold, nor anything of the method of buying such goods.

しかしもちろん、自分の売る品物の「原価」を見極める方法も、良い購入手段についても教わらなかった。

注は'cost' markとは要するに、＝ 小売値 ー 卸値 という。興味深い。ということは「売り手側が内緒で価格を共有するための暗号」ではない。むしろmark-upに近いようだ。

カーショットの得意な文句を私は、「心臓と肺が。こんな子は初めてだ」というように表現する。ときには、顧客の顔から三十センチメートル以内にいるときでさえも、隙を突いて聞こえた捕らえれどころのないつぶやきが、鍛えられたキップスの耳には―その、「心臓と肺が」に展開されて聞こえるのだった。

注はintercalaryをinterpolatedと言い換え。挿入された、ということか。要修正？

注文と見本をピン留めした書面を渡され、太陽と誘惑の街に放たれた。こうなれば、いずれ、そろそろ戻って遅れたことに対してガミガミ言われるのが賢明と観念して帰る、そのときまでは、何も咎められることのない、自由の身になる。
