いつ終わるかわからない作業：訳文の再点検（２０）

キップスの邦訳につき、ペンギン・クラシクスの注部分をチェックする作業の続き。

上巻２章注29のある文（temerarious）

Affairs of clothes and vanities they were, jealousies about a thing said, flatteries and mutual boastings, climaxes in the answering grasp of hands, the temerarious use of Christian names, culminations in a walk, or a near confidence, or a little pressure more or less. 

現状の関係は、服装や格好、聞いたことへの嫉妬、お世辞や互いの自慢話、極まり握り返す手、大胆に使う洗礼名、遂に散歩か内緒話か、手か肘か肩か触れたり握ったりしたりしなかったり。

注はtemerariousを言い換えて、この用法はやや皮肉ぎみという。

上巻２章注30のある文（Great Lady who is daughter of Uranus and the sea）

６節にはいった。

Close-sitting on a seat after twilight, with some little fondling, was indeed the boldest of a lover's adventures, the utmost limit of his enterprises in the service of that stark Great Lady, who is daughter of Uranus and the sea. 

実際、日が暮れても二人詰め腰掛け睦まじく少しなでることが、恋人にとって最も大胆な冒険、すなわち、ウーラノスと海の間の娘であられ厳然たる大貴婦人に仕える企てに許される限界だった。

ペンギン・クラシクス版ではGreat Ladyのあと（whoの前）にコンマがなくて限定用法である。

注はヘーシオドス「神統記」に従いアプロディーテー（ローマ神話ならウェヌス）の出生とウーラノスと海の関係を記し、続く第３章の第１節と注１を参照。

上巻３章注１のある文（Venus Epipontia）

Though these services to Venus Epipontia, the seaside Venus, and these studies in the art of dress, did much to distract his thoughts and mitigate his earlier miseries, it would be mere optimism to present Kipps as altogether happy. 

既に述べた海岸のビーナスへの奉仕や服飾のアートの学習は、大いに気を紛らわし、初期の苦悩を軽減したが、キップスがまったく幸福であるように描くのは単なる楽観というべきだろう。

注はVenus Epipontia（επιποντία）を「海上（あるいは海岸）のウェヌス」と読み、海が女神の出生地と指摘。

拙訳に相当部分はない。
