英文解釈の悩み：tolerance、fumbling

はっきりわからないけれど思いついたら解釈を改良したい、最近見直した二箇所の勝手メモ。

smote Kipps to tolerance

... there were unfair, dishonourable fights and miserable defeats and victories, there was bullying and being bullied. A coward boy Kipps particularly afflicted, until at last he was goaded to revolt by incessant persecution, and smote Kipps to tolerance with whirling fists. *1

 「A coward boy...」の前には省略があって、「There was a coward boy...」と読むのだろう。下線部の主語は「he」で、「 a coward boy」を指す。下線部は「tolerance」の意味に悩むが、つまりは、ちょっかい出さなくなるまで殴ったというように読める。

 fumbling traps

He perceived great bogs of ignorance about him, fumbling traps, where other people, it was alleged, real gentlemen and ladies, for example, and the clergy, had knowledge and assurance, bogs which it was sometimes difficult to elude.*2

ほかの人（の一部）が知っていることが沼（bogs）というよりは 罠（traps）に関することなのだろう。fumblingの主体がHe／himなのかtrapsなのか悩んだ。分詞構文なのか否か、と言っても良い。

悩んだところで結果として言っていることはそうはかわらないだろう。翻訳すると、目的言語で選択した表現に隠れ、どっちに解釈したのかはわからなくなりそうだ。（悩んでもむだか・・・）

しかしbogsとtrapsの呼応を意識すると、bogとtrapが同じものを指していることは確かだろう。bogはそれほど「沼」でもなさそうだ。ぬかるみ、と言っていいか知らないが、局所的な、はまりこみそうなものであって、日本語の「沼」というより罠だ。だから、というほどの必然性はないれど、分詞構文の可能性は捨てて、fumbling trapsは名詞句で「bogs of ignorance about him」と同格と見よう。（そう思ってみれば、ロシア語訳もイタリア語訳もその線で解釈しているようにしかみえないではないか）

下線部のなかのfumblingの意味がはっきりしない。罠にfumbling trapという種類のものがあるのだろうか。Googleなどして「fumbling trap」の用例が見つからないわけではないが、判然としない。

ほかの翻訳を参考にする。ロシア語訳*3では、下線部に相当の箇所は「各々のステップに仕掛けられた罠」のように処理してある。*4イタリア語訳*5では、「隠れた危険を秘めた罠」というような感じだろうか。*6
