キップスに起きている精神の変化は心理学者が転換と呼ぶものの一例だ。

何かオルゴールと同種のものだぞ！実際には、それは最高級のハルモニコンという機械演奏オルガン（パンハルモニコン）であってホテルの規模に合わせて特別に製作されたものだった。
注はbarrel-organのことと言い、（ペンギン・クラシクスにはないが上に引用した）続く文を紹介。

中巻７章注２４のある文（counterscarp ... Sousa）
It did not so much begin as blow up your counter-scarp or rush forward to storm under cover of melodious shrapnel. It had not so much an air as a ricochette. The music had, in short, the inimitable quality of Sousa.
演奏を始めるというよりは、聴衆の城の外堀を爆破したり、浴びせかけるメロディーの榴散弾を援護にどっと押し寄せたりする。そこには何かの旋律というよりは弾丸か何かの飛び跳ねがあった。要するに、その音楽は、まねのできないスーザの特性を帯びる。

Joyous, exorbitant music it was from the gigantic nursery of the Future, bearing the hearer along upon its torrential succession of sounds, as if he was in a cask on Niagara.
巨大な未来の保育所からやってくる楽しい底抜け音楽であり、聞き手を絶え間なく襲う怒涛の音に乗せて運び、それはまるで大樽の中に入れられてナイアガラ滝に流されるようだ。
注は設定の時代には樽にはいった人間のナイアガラ滝下り（1901年）はまだだから時代錯誤であるという指摘。
ja.wikipedia.orgしかしその種の滝下りの発想さえがあればよいわけだし、物語が語られる時までになされていていればおかしくない。むしろ小説執筆中その話題があったからこそ書かれたのではあるまいか？
とはいえ、人間が樽にはいってナイアガラという（訳者としては読み違えていないか不安になる）無茶が実際に行われたということを教えてくれるこの注はありがたい。
中巻７章注２６のある文（Metropolitan Music Hall）
He went out about seven and walked for a long time and dined at last upon a chop in the Euston Road; then he walked along to the Edgeware Road and sat and rested in the Metropolitan Music Hall for a time until a trapeze performance unnerved him and finally he came back to bed.
七時ごろ外出して長時間歩き、ついにユーストン・ロードでチョップの夕食を取る。そしてエジウェア・ロードまで歩いてメトロポリタン音楽堂ですわって、しばらく休み、空中ブランコの演技を見るうちに疲れ、とうとう寝に帰った。

At his departure Kipps, with a hot face, convulsive gestures and an embittered heart, tipped everyone who did not promptly and actively resist, including an absent-minded South African diamond merchant, who was waiting in the hall for his wife and succumbed to old habit.
出発の際には、キップスの顔は火照り、身ぶりは引きつり、心はくやしく、相手が直ちにはっきり抵抗しない限りだれも彼もにチップを渡した。これには玄関広間で妻を待っていたが昔の習慣に屈した南アフリカのとぼけたダイヤモンド商人も含まれる。

www.bartleby.comこの歌は日本語では（拙訳とは異なり）、見よむらがる悪の霊・・・、と歌われるものらしい。ミデヤン人が悪霊になっているところが興味深い。
中巻５章注１２のある文（Deep ... blowing to deep）
これはキップスが師匠クートから上流社会につき教えを受けた会話のあとの「私」のコメント。

×？深いことの深いこと。まるで、深みの流れは深すぎたようだ。
ペンギン・クラシクスにおいて（そして、おそらく拙訳の底本以外は皆）下線部のtooはtoである。注はDeep ... を詩篇42:7のDeep calleth unto deepのもじりとする。

意味不明。キップスとクートを指して、「深淵ども。淵から淵に吹くがごとし」？
（追記）英語辞書によればprofunditiesは深遠な意味、考え、言（ことば）を意味する。ここでは深遠な教え、とでもなろう。
中巻５章注１３のある文（Stylites ... chancel）
Kipps—in spite of the fact that the Walshinghams were more than a little lax—Kipps, who had formerly flitted Sunday after Sunday from one Folkestone church to another, had now a sitting of his own, paid for duly at Saint Stylites. There he was to be seen, always at the surplice evening service, and sometimes of a morning, dressed with a sober precision, and with an eye on Coote in the chancel.

注は柱頭行者stylite、surplice evening service、chancelを定義。この注を読むと不安になる。
もうここまでにstyliteはSt. Stylitesの形で二度ばかり既出である。行者というよりは教会の呼び名であるような印象である。
注によればsurplice evening serviceは比較的フォーマルな礼拝で聖職者や合唱団員が凝った装束になるらしい。その装束故にサープリスというのであろうか。

形からみて下線部は感嘆文と思われる。しかし拙訳は原意とは異なるらしい。
ペンギン・クラシクスにおいて下線部のdoは（拙訳の底本とは異なり）goになっている。注によれば豪勢にもしくはどんどん金を使う、というような意味らしい（金離れが良い）。
イタリア語版（Valentina Capocci訳）もUh, come se la spassano! ——いや、注のとはやや違う意味か（やれやれ存分やっているな？）。spassarsela - Wiktionary
go it justはgo itの強調と考えられる。口語go itのindulge in wild spendingという意味（OALD第三版）を採用すれば、なるほど注の教えるような意味になるわけだ。
goをdoにしたらどうかは知らない。
（追記：否定疑問！）下線部は疑問文の構造を取る感嘆文exclamation in the form of a questionとも感嘆疑問exclamatory questionとも呼ばれるものに該当する。否定疑問の形なのが気になるが（イギリス）英語ではむしろこの形が普通である。単純な疑問の形の場合もあるが、それは特に米語で普通である。以上は手元の英語参考書*1からの受売り。
しかし下線部の場合、反語的な否定疑問と思って解釈してもよいように思われる。きっと気前よく金を使ってくれるに違いないという期待と考えてはどうか？実は、このあとタクシー運転手にあいさつされてキップスは断ることになるのである。

仏語辞書にあるécritoireに近い（文具箱）。大きい辞書*1を見るとécritoireの古い形（1250年より前）にescritoireがあるがcabinet d'etudeというから大きそう（勉強部屋？）。
イタリア語版（Valentina Capocci訳）で用いているscrittoioは問題の単語と語源scrīptōriumを共有し、やはり部屋だったり机だったり（歴史的に）箱だったりしたようだ。scrittoio - Wiktionary
ともあれ、トランクに机がはいっているのは妙とは思っていたからécritoireの意味を採用して拙訳は修正したい。
