そうでしたか：あのことばのこんな意味

よく知られたことばのちょっと意外な意味での用例をKipps: The Story of a Simple Soulから少し、拾ってみよう。昔の言い方やスラングも含む。ほぼ全部、自分の作文で使うことはないと思う。

air

曲、節、メロディー

He whistled an air very softly to himself, put his head first on one side and then on the other.

静かに自分だけに一曲そっと口笛を吹き、顔を横に向け、そして返してその反対側の横に向けた。

It did not so much begin as blow up your counter-scarp or rush forward to storm under cover of melodious shrapnel. It had not so much an air as a ricochette.

演奏を始めるというよりは、聴衆の城の外堀を爆破したり、浴びせかけるメロディーの榴散弾を援護にどっと押し寄せたりする。そこには何かの旋律というよりは弾丸か何かの飛び跳ねがあった。

おそらく他と切り離すという意味かと思うが、海軍用語らしく・・・*1

間投詞。yesを強めたようなもの。反対はno fear

Kipps tried to bridge that opening gulf. "Remember the Hurons, Sid?"

追記：Kippsでは多発するが、こんな表現は他に見たこと聞いたことがない、と思っていたが、さきほど（2019/6/29）読んでいたサマセット・モームの第一次大戦後のお話Mr Know-Allにも用例があった。

＜サンフランシスコから横浜に向う船上、出航後間もなく。不服ながら船室を共にすることになったKeladaという男にイギリス人同士．．．とか言われ、つい私は＞「イギリス人なんですか？」無作法ぎみに尋ねる。「Rather、まさか私がアメリカ人に見えますか？骨の髄まで英国人です。私という人間は。」

（むちなどで）打つ？人や上着を目的語に取ってthrashの意味になることがあると言う*2。正確には、その条件に合わないけれど、この例は近い意味なのでは？
