A strange thing happened on Friday evening
A strange thing happened on Friday.
I was working overtime.
I bought a can of tea from the vending machine.
The price was 90 yen.
I put in a hundred-yen coin through the slot,
pressed the button for the tea,
retrieved the can and then the change,
which I slipped into a trouser pocket,
and walked back to the desk.
I noticed nothing unusual then.
I bought a second can of tea
by repeating the same procedure,
and returned with two coins clinking happily in the pocket.
Back at the desk,
I fished the two coins out the pocket,
and let them slide on my palm to drop them into the desk drawer.
Only then did I find
that they were not two ten-yen coins as I had believed.
They both were a dark-coloured piece of metal,
and one was a ten-yen coin all right,
but the colour of the other was strange,
too dark to be a ten-yen coin,
more black than brown.
Actually that was the dirtiest hundred-yen coin I had ever seen in my life.
Can you figure out how that sort of thing can happen?
