（雑談）なじみのあの単語にこの意味（call、regret）
生憎、残念（regret）
残念とは便利なことばです。悔いる気持は不明です。
I always regretted I didn't have a sister of my own, so perhaps I'm compensating.
これはジョン・ウィンダムの小説Trouble with Lichenにあった主人公らしき新米研究者*1ダイアナが会社の上司*2に言うセリフです。自分にも妹があったら良かったのに、と言うのですから残念であっても普通は本人の責任ではないから悔いるのではないでしょう。2017年BBCラジオの美しい朗読を見つけましたが、あいにく、この文は省略されていました*4：

ジャック・ロンドンの小説の題名はThe Call of the Wildでした。
動物間のコミュニケーションの一環ではあろうし、英語話者の方には呼んでいるように聞こえるのかしらとも思ってみるのですが、辞書を引くとそっけなく、callには、動物、特に鳥の鳴き声のような意味があるように書いてあります。こちらはジョン・バカンの39ステップス。動詞ですが
Otherwise there was only the calling of plovers and the tinkling of little streams.
鳥は鳴き、せせらぎが聞こえます。
選択・決定（call）
これは古い辞書では確認しにくいようです。古い版*5には見当たらない、もしくは不明確だけれど、新しめのLongmanの辞書*6に確かに決定*7とありました。
テレビドラマを見ているとたびたび出てくるので、私もさすがに気がつきました*8。まともな表現なのか知りませんが、お前の決めることはyour call、自分ではどうしようもなければnot my callなどと言っています。既にこの表現になじんでいる方も相当いらっしゃるでしょうが、あえて例を挙げれば・・・
